How we found these savings

Our estimated savings come from BC Hydro's Powersmart program at http://www.bchydro.com/popups/powersmart_tips.html

These figures are conservative because BC Hydro has some of the lowest rates in North America. You will likely save more depending on energy costs in your area.

The Powersmart Guide on the BC Hydro website gives you details about how each of these figures was calculated (number of hours, wattage, characteristics of appliances). For your convenience we converted these Canadian figures to US dollars (as of August 8, 2009). As of January 2011, the Canadian and American dollar are very close to par.

Although you can buy lots of energy-saving products (CFL bulbs, timers, programmable thermostats) for your home, we only listed no cost ways. Our goal is to show that small, free changes do make a difference. It is simply a matter of incorporating them into your everyday life.

In the same vein, we looked for very low or no cost ways for businesses to save money. Of course the actual savings will depend on the size of the business and how much, say, paper they use.
