Lia's hattrick

Catherine Winckler
Lia is the mother of Asher, a toddler with an incredible appetite. When her mom told her about hattrick she agreed she'd do one, using money she saved by making her own baby food. Asher's 10-jar-a-day baby food habit was costly and it contributed 10 empty jars to the landfill.

“Making Asher's food was painless,” she said, “I just ran the vegetables we were eating at dinner through the blender.”

She calculated she saved over 50% of the cost of store-bought food. Using the money she saved over a month, she donated $35 to Pencils for Kids, a hattrick charity.

Pencils for Kids, does one thing very well - provides school supplies to African classrooms. It was conceived after its founder watched one pencil being shared by a classroom in Africa. Each child had to wait for his turn for the pencil to do school work. Lia's $35 delivered six school books for a child.

To complete her hattrick, she told other moms about her project.
